Bamboo and Biodiversity: A Case Study on Bamboo Plantations’ Impact on Biodiversity

(Vidigueira, Southern Portugal)

Bamboo, known for its rapid growth and spreading nature, prompts the question: Can a bamboo plantation coexist with biodiversity? And why does biodiversity matter? Does a more diverse environment contribute to greater resilience?

This speech aims to provide insights into the impact of bamboo plantations on biodiversity, drawing from a preliminary study in southern Portugal. The study involves counting various plant species and animal groups, with a focus on Phyllostachys edulis dominance. A comparison will be made with adjacent fields using conventional practices to identify potential positive aspects.

We’ll gain an understanding of how biodiverse a bamboo plantation can be in the prevailing climate zone. Ultimately, the presentation underscores the significance of preserving and enhancing biodiversity for a more sustainable future – a concern that extends to everyone.
